Tom Hitchner has been a Writing Programs instructor since 2014. His classes approach shared cultural phenomena, such as food or popular music, and develop different forms and genres of writing around them. Recognizing that informal research, in the form of Googling, is standard in the current writing environment, his classes include research components at every stage, so that students are given enough time develop effective research strategies applicable to any form of writing. Dr. Hitchner received his B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and his Ph.D. in English from UC Irvine, where he wrote his dissertation on British spy literature before World War I. Prior to UCLA, he taught composition at UC Irvine and the Coast Community College District, and worked as a writing tutor with Southwestern Law School and National University.
